Jiu Jitsu

Jiu-jitsu brasileiro is a self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting (ne-waza) and submission. It focuses on the ability to ground an opponent, control the opponent, establish a dominant position and use a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.

Originally developed in the 1920s by Brazilian brothers Carlos, Oswaldo, Gastão Jr., George and Hélio Gracie, after Carlos learned jiu-jitsu from a traveling Japanese judoka, Mitsuyo Maeda, who himself mastered his ground fighting skills while interacting with Taro Miyake (Tanabe student), Sadakazu Uyenishi (Handa, Tanabe) and Yukio Tani (Tenjin Shinyo-ryu) and catch wrestlers in Europe.

It eventually became its own defined combat sport through the innovations, practices and adaptation of Gracie jiu-jitsu and judo, becoming an essential martial art for modern MMA. Governmental bodies such as the IBJJF work worldwide and set the rules and standards that must be held in BJJ sports competitions.

Gabriel Cocoiu, a passionate practitioner of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, is currently a student under the eye of Wim Deputter, as a renowned club (BRASA) in Leuven and a true reference in Belgium regarding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Grappling.

In 2016 he started MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) under the guidance of Dandois at Perfect team where he continues to evolve in Martial Arts to this day.

In the current competition he has already taken his place, so he achieved 2nd place in Grappling Industries, 1st place in Naga Amsterdam No Gi and 2nd place also in Naga Amsterdam Gi 2. From December 15, 2022, he wants to share his knowledge and skills with other interested parties and thus be part of an extra discipline that this club has to offer.
